Every Body Armor That Failed US Soldiers (The $2.5 Billion Scandal)

Over $2.5 billion spent on body armor. Soldiers in 130-degree Iraqi heat wearing 33-pound setups. A CEO stealing $10 million while holding billion-dollar contracts. Chinese counterfeit plates inside legitimate supply chains. And one armor system that passed federal certification, then disappeared four months after the Army banned it.

This video covers the full procurement history: from Vietnam-era flak jackets that couldn't stop rifle fire, through the Interceptor OTV rollout, the Point Blank fraud and 23,000-vest recall, the David Brooks scandal, and the Dragon Skin controversy. Every failure left soldiers worse off than they should have been.

🎯 KEY NUMBERS
- 42% of Marines killed by torso wounds died from injuries better coverage could have prevented
- Point Blank held $764.8M in active contracts while recalling 23,000 defective vests
- CEO David Brooks diverted $10M+ for personal use while soldiers wore his armor in combat
- Dragon Skin banned March 2006 — Army's own tests conducted four months later
- NIJ certification granted December 2006, revoked eight months later

⚠️ DRAGON SKIN — BOTH SIDES

This video highlights the circumstantial evidence and timing around Dragon Skin's ban. But the Army's case had real technical substance not covered in the video.

H.P. White labs, an independent facility the Army used specifically to avoid bias accusations, documented 13 penetrations in 48 shots, including complete failure on the second round. At 160°F, ceramic discs delaminated from the Kevlar backing, leaving gaps in chest coverage. The Army released x-rays publicly. The weight was also a genuine problem: 47.5 lbs versus 28 lbs for the Interceptor. The Air Force separately recalled 200 of 380 Dragon Skin vests for manufacturing defects, and courts sided with the Air Force when Pinnacle appealed. When NIJ requested objective warranty data to maintain certification, Pinnacle submitted customer testimonials. NIJ decertified the armor; federal courts upheld that decision. NBC's own independent technical expert rescinded his support after the 2007 congressional hearing.

None of this settles whether the process was clean. The timing, the contract awards, and the conflict of interest in having the Interceptor program manager oversee Dragon Skin testing remain legitimate open questions. Dragon Skin had real problems and real enemies — likely both.
