In this video, we explore one of the greatest stories in the history of science: how astronomers first discovered that light has a finite speed. Beginning with Galileo’s observations of Jupiter’s moons, we follow the work of Cassini, Picard, Huygens, and Ole Rømer as a search for a solution to the longitude problem led to a revolutionary idea. By carefully tracking the eclipses of Io, astronomers uncovered evidence that light does not travel instantaneously, providing the first estimate of the speed of light.
