Think of someone you've never gotten along with in your life. Someone you disagree with on every issue, who gets on your nerves over the slightest thing… someone you wouldn't even want to be near if you could help it.

Now imagine living in the same place as them. Not just for a day… but for weeks, even months. You sleep next to them. You eat at the same table. You walk the same path… and even fight in the same battle. And most importantly… there's nowhere you can escape to.

Most of us couldn't handle this for even a few days. But for Roman soldiers, it was a necessity. Eight people who didn't choose each other had to live together for years.

Here's the interesting part: Rome didn't see this as a problem. On the contrary… it saw it as a strength.
