In 1989, a 25-year-old student delivered a six-minute speech demanding the Soviets leave Hungary. That speech made Viktor Orban the most famous person in the country. 35 years later, he's still in charge, having rewritten the constitution, captured the courts and media, gerrymandered the electoral map, and turned Hungary into the EU's most corrupt member state.

But now his grip is slipping. The economy shrank in 2023, inflation hit 17.2% (the highest in the EU), billions in EU funds are frozen, and a former Fidesz insider named Peter Magyar is polling 16 points ahead of him.
