On the 8th of June 1867, a compromise was concluded between the Empire of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary and Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth were ceremoniously crowned in Buda. This was the birth of Austria-Hungary, a dual monarchy with two mostly independent countries headed by the same monarch. But why was this compromise even necessary in the first place and what did it entail? This episode will answer these questions by delving deep into the history of Hungary in the Habsburg realm since the late 17th century and by explaining the special status it always wanted to hold. It will also outline the failed revolution of 1848, its crushing and how both countries still managed to find a reconciliation afterwards.
