Between 1940 and 1945, Canada held over 34,000 enemy prisoners in 26 camps from Alberta to New Brunswick. What those prisoners found behind Canadian wire contradicted everything the Third Reich had taught them about the enemy. The conditions were so extraordinary that prisoners wrote letters home so glowing, their own officers had to censor them — because praising the enemy's hospitality was dangerously close to treason.

Then came an order from London that threatened to destroy everything Canada had built. What happened next involved fire hoses, hockey sticks, tear gas — and the only battle of the Second World War fought on Canadian soil.
