Watch a millwright and his crew replace the full sail cross on an 18th-century smock mill — no crane, no machinery. Just rope, oak, a hand-cranked ground winch, and five centuries of craft knowledge.
Two 14-metre oak stocks are hauled up one at a time using a block and tackle system, threaded through the poll end, and wedged solid on all four faces. Then the four sails go up the same way — lifted by the same winch, strapped to the stocks with iron bands, and fitted with canvas cloths ready to catch the wind.
Filmed at the Rhineland Open Air Museum in Kommern, Germany, with a working millwright doing this job exactly the way it's been done for hundreds of years.
