The Northrop XB-35 represented a radical shift in aerodynamic design, utilizing a flying wing configuration to maximize range and payload capacity. Despite promising early scale tests and an initial military order for 200 aircraft , the heavy bomber program was heavily handicapped by structural and mechanical limitations. Severe harmonic vibrations in the contra-rotating propeller gearboxes , chronic radial engine overheating , and a dangerously cramped pressurized cabin that left the crew with virtually no chance of emergency bailout compromised its operational viability. As production delays mounted and the strategic landscape shifted , the military pivoted focus to the Convair B-36 , reducing the piston-powered flying wing to a costly research platform for future aviation development.
