Road hierarchy is holding you back. Now before you get your pitchforks out, let me explain. Road hierarchy is not the problem. The problem is that most people use it so rigidly that their grids stop feeling connected, functional, and natural. And if you use suburban road logic in a dense urban area, it gets even worse.

So today, I’m going to show you how to build better grids without completely throwing road hierarchy out the window. We’ll start by framing the area, then create a few orientation points to guide the layout. From there, we’ll build the final grid, zone everything in, add the services it needs, and then detail the whole area to make it feel integrated.
