Building a Long Log Fire in heavy snowfall | Winter Bushcraft Camping

Our first time trying a long log fire during a winter bushcraft trip in one of our favorite forests. It turned out to be quite a job to prepare, but once it started burning, it went better than expected. Slow, steady, and really hot.

On the way we passed an old shelter we built last year from stones, logs and pine needles. Crazy to see it still standing and in good shape. The logs we found this time had a bit of mold on them, so we were worried they wouldn’t burn well. But once the fire got going, it barely needed any attention. Sometimes we just added a few small sticks between the logs for more air.

Then it started snowing hard. Sitting there in an open shelter, surrounded by the forest and heavy snow, felt unreal. Even when the fire was just glowing, it gave off so much heat that the ground around us stayed warm for meters. We grilled a piece of steak over the flames, enjoyed the silence and the moment.

One of the most comfortable nights we’ve ever had out in the cold.
